It has been verified and confirmed that no fewer than 10,000 houses and structures have been completely washed away by the floodwaters in the Yusufati local government area of Yobe state since the beginning of the rainy season.
The disclosure was made by the Chairman of the Assessment Committee of Flood Victims constituted in the LGA, Malam Baba Alkali while briefing Journalists on Saturday.
Baba Alkali also said that the flood affected almost all parts of the local government rendering the victims homeless and taking refuge in different locations across the area.
He also stated that the Council Chairperson has already constituted a 15-man committee under his leadership to go round all the areas to assess the level of damage caused by the flood disaster.
Baba Alkali said the Committee comprised of Civil Servants, Politicians, and Security agents operating in the area for effective representation.
According to him, “We have 10 political Wards in the local government, and in each Ward, at least, we have identified over 1,000 houses that have collapsed. No lives were lost, but many people were variously injured, farmlands and properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed.”
He also said; “We had a Sub-committee that included the security agents and the vice Chairman. They went round and identified 28 households that are in critical condition and need emergency attention.”
“The Committee assisted them with some amount, and we did this out of the money that the Chairman released to us for the work of our Committee,” he added.
Baba Alkali thenbrevealed that the Emir of Yusufari, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Muhammad Ibn Zannah Zakaria, visited some villages and saw things for himself, and sympathized with the victims.
He maintained that people have continued giving the Committee donations for the victims including Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan who donated N10m as well as the Member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tijjani Zannah Zakaria who gave N5m, Member, Yobe State House of Assembly, Hon. Hassan Muhammed, N2m and Commissioner of Health, Dr. Lawan Gana N1m.
The Committee Chairman continued saying, “Therefore, we are appealing to the people that the doors of donation are still opened. We are calling on individuals, politicians, and well-meaning people to assist the people of Yusufari local government.”
