I stumbled across a quote the other day that hit me like a ton of bricks: “The system was rigged against us; nobody actually taught us how to keep money while we were growing up.”

Does that resonate with you as much as it did with me? Honestly, it felt like someone finally put words to a frustration I’ve felt for years.

The Script We Didn’t Ask For

Let’s be real—most of us were raised on a diet of “spend now, think later.” From the time we’re kids, we are bombarded with a very specific, very loud message: Spending is exciting. Saving is a chore. We see the latest gadgets, the must-have fashion, and the “treat yourself” culture everywhere we look. We get pocket money for school and a guide on how to spend it, but no guide on how to save some before sending.

We were sold a lie that financial success is about what you buy, not what you keep. And the result? A generation of people running on a treadmill that never stops—living paycheck to paycheck, feeling that constant, low-level hum of anxiety about the “what ifs”.

Now, let’s flip the script; we’ve been told saving is “boring”, but let’s start to look at it differently. Saving isn’t about deprivation; it’s about freedom.

When we save, we aren’t just putting numbers in a bank account. We are buying ourselves peace of mind and paying ourselves. It’s time we start to see our savings account as our income or salary account, that will keep growing once we keep saving. We are building a “safety net” that lets us sleep better at night. There is nothing boring about the power to handle a medical emergency or a job change without spiraling into a panic. That, to me, is incredibly empowering.

Where Do We Go From Here?

The truth is, this isn’t just a “me” problem or a “you” problem. It’s systemic. We haven’t prioritised financial literacy in our schools or our homes, and we’re seeing the fallout in our communities every day.

I truly believe that understanding how money works should be a fundamental human right. We need to start talking about this at the dinner table and demanding better education for our kids. We need to create a world where everyone—not just the lucky few—has the tools to build a stable future.

The “consumerist trap” is real, but we don’t have to stay stuck in it. Let’s start valuing our future selves as much as we value our current purchases. The time to change the narrative is right now.

The year is still new and changes can still be made. Let’s start prioritising saving.

Happy Saving!
