The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has described the passing of Ruth Obadon Otabor, as confirmed by the Director of Insurance at Dangote Cement Plc, Mr. Obashola Alo, as a painful reminder of the recurring tragedies that continue to claim the lives of innocent students.
Ruth, a student of Auchi Polytechnic and mother of two, died at Lagoon Hospital after being hit by a Dangote Cement truck.
Comrade Eshiofune Paul Oghayan (Shoprite), President of NAPS, in a statement on Monday noted:
“Though she was swiftly evacuated to one of Nigeria’s foremost hospitals, Ruth could not survive the severe injuries. Her death is a painful reminder of the recurring tragedies that continue to claim innocent student lives.
“In my engagement with the Director, he assured us that the company will take full responsibility and also make provisions for death benefits for Ruth’s family and other necessities. While we acknowledge this commitment, we emphasize that no compensation can ever replace a life.
“We condole with her family and children, and we assure the student community that Ruth’s death will not be in vain. Her memory strengthens our demand for justice, accountability, and safer roads for all students.
“To our students across the country, we urge you to remain calm and peaceful. Be assured that Ruth’s two children will be awarded full scholarships from primary school through tertiary education, and steps will be taken to immortalize her at her alma mater, Auchi Polytechnic, as a symbol of our collective struggle for justice and safer roads, and of eternal remembrance in the hearts of Nigerian students.”
