As part of its humanitarian service, the Rotary Club of Ibadan Jericho-Metro on Thursday donated notebooks and toiletries to IMG Basic Schools 1, 2, & 3, Lagos-Bye-Pass, Molete, Ibadan.
The materials donated include notebooks, detergents, disinfectants, buckets, mops, and air fresheners, among others.
Speaking, the president of the club, Mr Salisu Afolabi, said the aim of the gesture was to cater for the needs of the students so as to improve their educational comprehension.
He said, “We believe and realise that government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of education in Nigeria, most importantly in Oyo State, and we felt that as Rotarians, let us extend our hands of fellowship to the underprivileged people, and that’s why we are here today.
“We gave them exercise books; also, when we came for the needs assessment, they said they have problems fetching water because they have drums but don’t have buckets, so we gave them buckets and some of their buildings have defects, and we are going to do a little bit of renovation for them, among others.
Chairperson of the Medical Committee and Vocational Director 2024/25 of Rotary Club Ibadan Jericho-Metro, Mrs Yemisi Folasere, also spoke on the health knowledge passed across to the pupils by her, as well as the usefulness of the donated items.
She said, “I came in here today to demonstrate hand-washing techniques to pupils of IMG, Molete. It’s been an interesting edition, teaching the pupils the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) seven steps to effective hand washing techniques, which include washing the hands before and after eating, after using the toilet, and after doing anything dirty with the hand, and the pupils were able to demonstrate what I taught them.
“The pupils all demonstrated how to wash their hands effectively, and the teachers promised to help them use all the items that were donated for better health conditions in the school environment.”
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Chairman, Ibadan South-West local branch, Comrade Bakare Akintunde, thanked the club and also appealed to them to do more.
Akintunde said, “We really appreciate the gesture at this period of time, especially when everything is hard to get.
“The gesture is very appreciated; the club members gave health talks to our pupils; they taught them one or two things regarding their wellbeing, and not only that, they presented exercise books and some other materials.
“We want to appeal to Rotary Club to continue to do more.”
