Redefine your style with shorts

There is that dilemma many women fall into in the fashion world: how to wear shorts without looking like a slut. With the current weather, there is a perfect excuse to let your skin breathe this season. However, if you want to add some taste to your short-wearing hustle, whether it’s as an individual outfit, or as a two-piece, below are a few tips:

Layer up on the top

Depending on the event your shorts will grace, you may want to add a few layers to the top outfit to provide some sort of balance – unless it’s a beach event, anyway.

Let your legs breathe

For those who have the legs to work it, shorts are a perfect excuse to show off. If it’s your first time, and you don’t feel quite comfortable showing off so much flesh just yet, take your length down a notch and let it hover over the knees.

Sandals, sneakers, or maybe heels

The footwear would also be determined by the event you expect to attend wearing shorts. However, bear in mind that if you wear heels with shorts, there is the tendency to make your legs appear much longer than usual, so ensure that your legs are the right fit for the shorts-on-heels. If not, just stick with strapped sandals, wedges, or sneakers.

Don’t crop anything

The goal is to avoid looking like a slut, and wearing crop top over shorts, in broad daylight, for the Nigerian setting, is simply pushing the slut button a little too hard. The country is just not ready to accept such fashion statement, just yet. So, unless you’re shooting a music video, having a timeout at the beach, or dancing your sorrow away within the strict confines of a night club or other such indoor settings, keep your belly button hidden beneath fabrics.

The bum alternative

Bum shorts are very tricky to work with, without the wearer coming off looking questionable, especially for outside-a-club events. If you absolutely have to, you could work with a longer or loose-fitting top, or better still, wear something like panty hose, stockings or sheer tights for mini coverage.

Stride with confidence

There is no better way to throw your ‘shorty’ efforts into the bin, than to maintain a wobbly pose when working with shorts. When it comes to this outfit, the most important thing you need is confidence. You will be turning more than a few heads, and you need all the poise you can muster to maintain your stylish look.
