The Petroleum Training Institute (PTI), Effurun, Delta State, recently witnessed a landmark event as the Principal and Chief Executive, Dr Samuel Onoji, officially launched the Federal Government’s Technical Vocational Education and Training (FGN-TVET) skills training and National Skills Qualification (NSQ) certification Programme.

The ceremony, held at the institute’s main auditorium, brought together members of the top management team, industry leaders and learners in a show of commitment to advancing Nigeria’s technical education landscape.

In his address, Dr Onoji underscored the importance of practical skills in the modern job market. “We are at a pivotal moment where technical expertise forms the backbone of the oil and gas sector. Our commitment at PTI is to ensure that our graduates are fully equipped to meet industry demands,” he said.

The FGN-TVET initiative was designed to empower thousands of young Nigerians through a structured framework that delivers training in various vocational disciplines.

According to Onoji, the NSQ certification will serve as a standard measure of competence, thereby enhancing participants’ employability within and beyond the oil and gas industry.

Highlighting the relevance of technical education to national development, he said: “This initiative is essential in preparing our youths to excel in an increasingly competitive global job market. The FGN-TVET programme aligns with PTI’s mission to nurture a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting both the  local and international needs.”

The programme, launched by the Federal Government, aimed to equip Nigerian youths with practical knowledge and hands-on training in key technical fields, while providing a pathway to earn the NSQ certification.

The move resonates with PTI’s long-standing vision of promoting quality technical education tailored to industry requirements.

Onoji further acknowledged the collaboration between PTI and its industry partners, noting that such partnerships are critical to the programme’s success.

The flag-off ceremony featured live demonstrations of training modules and testimonials from past beneficiaries of PTI’s vocational programmes.

Attendees expressed optimism about the institute’s plans to broaden its training capacity through new technologies and innovative teaching methods.

As the programme takes off, PTI will continue to collaborate with local businesses and stakeholders to ensure that its training outputs meet current and future industry expectations. The initiative reinforces the Institute’s role as a leading hub for technical education and marks a new chapter in Nigeria’s drive for skill acquisition and sustainable economic growth.
