The new Assistant Inspector General of Police, (AIG) for Zone 17, Mr Etim Ene-Okon, on Monday, warned the citizen of Ondo State against inciting statements that could lead to reprisal attacks following the killing of some indigenes of the state who were returning from Bauchi to Ondo State after attending an Islamic function.
Ene-Okon stated this while assuming duty as the new AIG for zone 17, covering Ondo and Ekiti States appealed to the people of the state to be calm and not take the law into their hands.
He assured that the Inspector General of Police, the Ondo State government and the federal government were working hard to fish out perpetrators of the attack with an assurance that they will not go unpunished.
He said “I want to appeal to you against reprisal attack. The IG swung into action immediately after the incident and send a strong team to investigate the situation and about 22 people have been arrested in connection with the incident
“You cannot carry out any reprisal attack when you don’t know those behind the incident and the reasons for doing it, but I am sure that the Commissioner of Police in Ondo has taken serious measures to guide against reprisal attack.
“The governor of the state is not sleeping and we all know the steps he is taking as no one is grounded with facts of the situation yet and the governor is waiting to get more brief on the incident
“I will appeal to everybody especially in the Akoko area of the state to remain calm and wait to know the actual fact and they will know what the state government and the Nigerian government will do. The Plateau State government has taken enough measures too to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.”
Some 22 people who were returning from Bauchi to Ondo State after attending an Islamic function in Bauchi were attacked and killed along Rukuba road, Jos North, while no fewer than ten others sustained injuries.
While addressing men of the police from the state, the AIG warned police officers in the zone against any act of laziness and corrupt tendencies that could tarnish the image of the police force.
He warned that any officers found culpable of such acts would be sanctioned, assuring that motivation of officers within the zone would be given priority in order to enhance and ensure efficient policing.
He said, “I’ve zero tolerance for laziness and corruption. Motivation is very important in policing. If you don’t motivate, results will be negative.”
He described the two states as peaceful, attributing it to the proactiveness of the Commissioner of Police in the two states, towards curbing crimes and criminal activities.
“The crime situation in this part of the country will determine what my strategy will be in curbing the insecurity in the zone. The strategy that works in the East might not work here.
“Zone 9 where I come from in the past few months have been having issues with insecurity and the IGP introduced operation restore peace and the zone is now peaceful.
“So, coming to a place that is relatively peaceful, then everyone should be rest assured that the peace in the state will be sustained with my arrival in the zone.”
