THE Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has appealed to Federal and state governments across the country to ensure the payment of pension and workers’ salaries for the month of June before the Salah celebration, next week.
This, according to a statement released in Abuja and signed by the General Secretary of NUP, Elder Actor Zal, will enable the pensioners celebrate the Eid-fitri with their family in a good state of mind.
Elder Zal lamented that unlike the working class, the senior citizens after retirement, depend only on their meagre pensions to meet up with their financial obligations.
While commending the acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo for always listening to the cries of the pensioners, he pointed out that most pensioners have spent their little savings observing the holy Ramadan fasting and have little or nothing to celebrate the sallah.
He said, “The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) his pleading with the Federal and state governments to release payment of pension and workers’ salaries for the month of June before the Eid-fitri celebration, to enable pensioners enjoy the celebration with their families.
“We appreciate the acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo for always listening to the cries of the pensioners through prompt release of funds for their payments but the federal and the state governments should always make payment of pensions and salaries a priority during the period of festivities.”
He therefore appealed to the Federal Government to kindly release June pension so that “our members can enjoy the sallah celebrations,” adding that “we believe that this is a listening government and we are sure the government will accede to our request so that our people can have cause to smile during the celebration.”
