The Area Controller of Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Babajide Jaiyeoba, on Tuesday handed over 12 sacks and 195 compressed wraps of cannabis sativa to the state command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), with the promise to leave no stone unturned in ensuring the disruption of activities of criminal elements.
The illicit drug, weighing 259 kilogrammes, was intercepted by the area command’s officers while on routine patrol operation, according to Comptroller Jaiyeoba.
While handing over the intercepted drugs to the state NDLEA Commander, Olayinka Joe-Fadile, the Customs Area Controller said that it was in line with the policy thrust of the acting Comptroller General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and also aimed at strengthening the already existing interagency collaboration between the anti-smuggling and anti-drug agencies.
He assured the public that officers and men of his area command would continue tbeir duties professionally with the aim of making the nation safe for all citizens.
Comptroller Jaiyeoba expressed appreciation to other security agencies for collaborating to fight against smuggling.
He also recognised the cooperation of traditional rulers, community leaders, stakeholders as well as Oyo and Osun State governments and their people in providing enabling environments for officers to perform their statutory duties.
Responding, the NDLEA Commander appreciated Comptroller Jaiyeoba and the Comptroller General for approving the handover of the intercepted drug.
“This is a sign of the existing collaboration and synergy between the two agencies, and it shows that no one can do it all… We work together in the interest of the nation,” Commander Joe-Fadile said.
He thanked the Customs for the discovery, recovery and handover of the cannabis, with the promise that it would be properly kept in custody while it would be destroyed and taken out of circulation at the proper time.
