The Bauchi State Government has implemented measures to address the issue of over 1.2 million Out of School Children (OOSC) in the state, according to Dr Surunbai Sheikh Dahiru, the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
He made this announcement during a presentation on the Key Government Intervention to reduce OOSC at a UNICEF Media Dialogue in Bauchi.
Dr Surunbai Sheikh Dahiru, represented by Korijo Buba, the Director of School Services at SUBEB, highlighted that the measures adopted are designed to be learning and teaching-friendly in line with current educational trends. Some of these measures include conducting eye screenings for over 3000 pupils, implementing projects like Learn to Read, Mu Karanta, and RANA, abolishing corporal punishment for pupils, and recruiting more teachers.
Furthermore, Surunbai Dahiru emphasized other important interventions, including collecting quality education data, implementing a reward system for deserving teachers and pupils, eliminating school levies, providing uniforms, learning materials, and school meals, constructing water points and classrooms, among other initiatives.
During another presentation on the issue of Out of School Children in the state, Malam Yakubu Ahmad, the Director of Admin and Human Resources at the Ministry of Education, highlighted that despite these interventions, Bauchi still ranks as having the highest number of out-of-school children in the country.
Specifically, the Bauchi and Alkaleri Local Government Areas are leading in the state. Ahmad stressed the need for attitudinal change and the formulation and implementation of policies targeting specific communities based on their unique challenges.
According to the 2022 data from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), Bauchi State has the highest number of Out of School Children in the country, with 1,239,759 children.
Following Bauchi are Zamfara, Katsina, and Kano as the second, third, and fourth states with the highest numbers, reporting 883,952; 873,633; and 837,479 out-of-school children respectively.
