The lawmakers directives followed public outcry in the state over the proposed plan to discontinue free education at Primary and secondary school levels and plan to increase tuition of tertiary institutions in the state.
The lawmakers during a plenary session, noted that the development would bring hardship on the people of the state to sobering the current economic situation in the country and the state.
The lawmaker representing, Ondo West 1, Hon Ifedayo Akinsoyinu, who called the attention of the House to the development said from the communique issued by the stakeholders at the summit, it calls for government withdrawal from funding education.
He said the policy would further impoverish the people and make education inaccessible to the masses, especially children of the common man.
Another lawmaker, representing Ondo west constituency 11, Ade Adeniyi, said such implementing such policy totally contravene the MDG agenda which stipulates access to education by all.
Speaking on the said communique, the chairman House Committee on Education Hon Ajimotokin, however said that the state government has not looked into the communique of the summit and should not be considered as government policy.
He however enjoined government to carry the lawmakers along before implementing any clause of the communique.
The House, however, came up with a resolution read by the speaker, Rt Hon Bamidele Oleyelogun that, “the communique was just a report of what transpired at the summit but not a government policy.
“That the commissioner for Education should submit 40 copies of the communique and positions of government to the house immediately.
“That government should not implement any part of the communique until it is fully debated by the legislative arm who are the elected representatives of the people.”
