Ondo lawmakers may commence Ondo deputy gov’s impeachment

Indications emerged that members of the Ondo State House of Assembly may this week commence the impeachment process of the embattled Deputy Governor of the state, Hon. Agboola Ajayi, who recently defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Tribune Online learnt that the leadership of the House of Assembly has met and arranged to put necessary machinery in motion to ensure that the impeachment processes commence this week.

To this end, the leadership of the Assembly has directed all the 26 lawmakers which comprise 23 APC lawmakers, two PDP and one ZLP who have been on recess to resume for legislative duties on Monday.

The leadership in an advertised statement signed by the Clerk of the House, Mr Bode Adeyelu, urged the lawmakers to resume on Monday 6th of July for legislative duties.

The statement read: “This is to inform all Honourable Members of the Ondo State House of Assembly that following the expiration of your recess on Friday, 3rd July 2020, I have been directed by Rt. Hon. Oleyelogun Bamidele to enjoin you to resume for legislative duties on Monday 6th July 2020.

“All Honourable members are to please treat this information as very important.”

A member of the House of Assembly who spoke with our reporter, however, disclosed that members of the APC in the House have been meeting on how to commence the process for the impeachment of Ajayi.

He also said the leadership of the APC had met with some of the lawmakers and made necessary resolutions but said the matter should be considered to be speculation for now.

He said he could not confirm if the members of the opposition in the House of Assembly had been briefed on the development but said the House has not received any notice for the commencement of impeachment process of the deputy governor.

“We have not been informed of any impeachment process by the leadership of the House, and let us just consider all these we are hearing as ordinary speculation for now. When we get to the bridge we shall cross it and we will know how to handle the situation.”

Ajayi, two weeks ago, defected to the opposition PDP to run for the governorship ticket of the party but vowed not to resign his position as deputy governor despite leaving the party.
