The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, directed Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation NNPC), National Oil Spill Detection & Response Agency (NOSDRA) and Conoil to be involved in the cleaning up of oil spill in two Local Government Areas of Delta State.
The resolution was passed sequel to the adoption of a motion sponsored by Hon Ife Afe who observed that the primary responsibility of every government is to protect lives and properties.
“The House notes the devastating oil spill that occurred from indigenous oil firms wellhead, con oil company at Ekoko 1, Ekoko2 , Egborode, Mereje, Kpokpogri and other communities in Kpowe Local Government Area and Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State.
“The House is aware that the oil spill started since February and was reported on 1st March on TV. It’s believed that it is the wellhead of Conoil company.
“The House is saddened that the spill has affected the above-named communities, which is so massive that the land used for fishing chad been contaminated affecting the livelihood of these communities.”
According to him, all efforts to get Conoil to intervene proved futile, the company has displayed the highest level of negligence and abandonment to the host communities.
To this end, the House mandated a joint committee on Upstream and Environment to visit the area to access the environmental impact and report back to the House within four weeks.
In the bid to bring succour to the host communities, the House mandated National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to send relief materials to the affected communities to cushion the effects of the oil spill in the two Local Government Areas.
