THE Nigeria Union of Local Government Employee (NULGE) has staged a zonal rally, demanding for political, financial and administrative autonomy from the federal government.
Speaking during the zonal rally on Wednesday in Lafia, which culminates Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Kogi, Benue, Kwara and F.C.T, the National President of the union Ibraheem Khaleel described the lack of autonomy as a setback to the union.
He explained that, the inability, for the Local Government Areas to get autonomy has given room for corruption which has left workers of the union at the receiving end.
Comrade Khaleel called for the scrapping of Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC), abolition of State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), implementation of supreme court judgement for the conduct of LG election and not appointment/selection by state government.
The President also sued for payment of constitutional 10% Internally Generated Revenue by the state government, recognition of local government service commission and the office of the auditor general for local government in the constitution.
Reacting to the request of the union when the rally got to the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, the Deputy Speaker of the House, Godiya Akwashiki promised that the assembly would do all it can to ensure that the local government gets their autonomy.
