In what appears to be encouraging news and a significant development, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced its approval for the commencement of academic programmes at the Niger State University of Education. The university, posthumously named after the late Engr. Abdulkadir A. Kure, a former governor of the state, is set to begin its academic year in Minna, Niger State.
The Chairman of the Implementation Committee, Professor Mohammed Kuta Yahaya, made this disclosure during a World Press Conference held on Thursday at the University premises in Minna. He highlighted the dedication of the current administration led by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago in reviving the university project, which was initially initiated nearly eight years ago during the tenure of former Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu.
Professor Yahaya stated that Governor Umaru Bago took on the responsibility of reactivating the university, which had received NUC approval in 2015 but had been dormant for more than eight years due to the lack of support from the immediate past administration of former Governor Babakar Sani Bello.
According to Prof. Yahaya Kuta, with renewed commitment, Governor Umaru Bago’s administration advocated for recognition of the university, leading to its validation as the 63rd State University in Nigeria and the 270th university in the country’s higher education system.
The Professor of Agriculture Extension at the University of Ibadan further mentioned that to fast-track the implementation, Governor Bago inaugurated the Implementation Committee, co-chaired by himself (Professor Kuta Yahaya) and the Secretary to the State Government, Elijah Bakker.
He emphasised that despite challenges, the committee engaged with entities such as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the NUC, resulting in the university being ready to commence academic programmes in the 2023/2024 session.
Professor Kuta Yahaya proudly declared that, after a recent resource verification visit by the NUC, the university received a 100% score for the 41 programmes presented. He highlighted the impressive facilities on the campus, including an ICT centre with 1000 computers, a well-equipped computer training centre, an e-library, and faculty buildings with air-conditioned offices.
Governor Bago’s commitment to human capital development and infrastructure was acknowledged, with a budget allocation of 20 billion naira for the university’s takeoff. The university is open for admissions, and Nigerians from all walks of life are encouraged to apply.
The university, now officially named Abdulkadir A. Kure University, is poised to make a significant impact on education and contribute to the development of human resources in Niger State, stressing that the implementation committee is moving forward to complete the official gazetting of the university’s name and ensure compliance with all due processes.
He said, “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, Niger State University of Education is prepared to welcome students”, adding that the journey to educational excellence has just begun.
