NIS celebrates first female surveying, geo-informatic professor in Nigeria

Anambra State branch of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), has celebrated Professor Mrs. Ebele Josephine Emengini of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, for emerging as the first female Professor of Surveying and Geo-informatic in Nigeria.

The celebration took place at the Surveyor’s House Amawbia -Awka on Thursday, during the Institution’s 2024 mandatory continuous professional development workshop.

The Chairman of the branch, Gabriel Chukwuloka Okeke, while commending the management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka for promoting one of its own, described Professor Emengini, as an Amazon, a woman who has distinguished herself in a male dominated profession.

Okeke noted that NIS chose to celebrate her to motivate other female members particularly, the upcoming ones to work hard to make the Institution proud among other professional bodies in Nigeria.

In her appreciation speech, Prof Emengini, said she was promoted to the professorship in 2019 under the leadership of Prof Charles Okechukwu Esemone.

Speaking briefly on how she attained the academic height, Prof. Emengini said “I started my career as a graduate assistant lecturerer in the department of Surveying and Geo-informatics Unizik, 22-years ago, shortly after my first and second degree both in Surveying and Geo-informatics in the same department, which am now the pioneer staff of the department. Then proceeded to Lancaster University United Kingdom UK, where I got my PhD in Remorsesis, a branch curse in Surveying via scholarship for three and half years before finally returned back to Unizik as a full time lecturerer.

“I became a member of NIS immediately after my first degree.

“I was promoted to Professorship meritously due to my hard work, commitment and dedication in 2019. I have been a staff of Unizik for the past 22 good years and since I stared my academic pursue, I never had break uptil this moment and I am married with four Godly children.”

Prof Emengini, while commending the leadership of Anambra State branch of NIS for celebrating her achievements, charged young female students of surveying to emulate her academy dedication and hard work.

In their seperate commendation, Joseph Ejike, Surv. Onejede Ayo, Chineye Uzoma Okeke, Chuks Donatus and Chiegbu Ejike Okeke, described her as go-getter, achiever and a trailblazer.

They noted that the NIS Anambra State branch, celebrated her for her doggedness and perseverance for making it to the pinnacle of the profession in Nigeria.
