The Nigerian Embassy in Germany on Monday said it had requested a thorough investigation into the alleged attack on the former deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, in NuĀremberg.
A statement by the embassy made available to Tribune Online said the move was necessary in order to identify the perpetrators and brĀing them to justice in accoĀrdance with German law.
According to the embassy, the investigation would deter future acts of violenĀce against officials of the Nigerian GovĀernment on German soil, particularly agĀainst the backdrop of threats by the proscribed IPOB to caĀrry out similar attacks on more dignitaries from the country.
The statement read, ” The Embassy of NigĀeria, Berlin, Germany wishes to react to viral videos of a vicious physical atĀtack on the immediate past Deputy PresidĀent of the Nigerian Senate and serving Senator of the FedeĀral Republic of NigeĀria, Ike EkweremadĀu, by some members an illegal and terrorĀist entity named Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) in NuĀremberg on 17th AuguĀst 2019.

“The attack happened at an event organiĀsed by Nigerians in Germany under the auspices of a socio-Ācultural organisation known as Ndigbo GeĀrmany, a registered entity in the FedeĀral Republic of GermĀany. Invitations were extended to Nigerian dignitaries, including the DistĀinguished Senator and Nigeriaās AmbassĀador to Germany, His Excellency Yusuf MaĀitama Tuggar.
“The Nigerian Ambassador also honoured the inĀvitation but arrived at the venue shorĀtly after the incideĀnt. The organisers reportedly requested for police protectĀion to ensure public order during the evĀent but were told that the threat level was minimal and did not require statĀioning of any personĀnel at the venue befĀore the incident.
“The Embassy has reĀquested a thorough investigation of this attack with a view to identifying the perpetrators and brĀinging them swiftly to justice in accoĀrdance with German law.
“This would deter future acts of violenĀce against officials of the Nigerian GovĀernment on German soil particularly agĀainst the backdrop of threats by the proscribed IPOB to caĀrry out similar attaĀcks on more Nigerian dignitaries, espeĀcially those from the South Eastern part of the country.”
