Former Catholic Bishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has made an appeal for peaceful solutions in Niger Republic, saying he was against solutions that bring death and war.
In an interview with Vatican News, the Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja expressed his opposition to military action by the ECOWAS countries against Niger Republic military leaders, saying no to war, no to killings.
African Union (AU) has during the past week suspended Niger Republic from all its activities following last month’s military coup there and told its members to avoid any action that might legitimise the junta.
Also, the Economic Community of West African States has been trying to negotiate with the junta, saying that if diplomatic efforts fail, it is prepared to send troops into Niger to restore constitutional order.
