Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) is set to roll out a new flagship initiative aimed at strengthening diaspora engagement and accelerating national development.
This was announced on Tuesday by the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who unveiled the Connected Diaspora x DOWA Start-Up Challenge alongside the Connected Diaspora Flagship Event 2025.
Describing the initiatives as timely, transformative, and strategically aligned with Nigeria’s development priorities, Dabiri-Erewa said both platforms are designed to tap into the creativity, expertise and entrepreneurial energy of Nigerians across the globe.
According to her, the Start-Up Challenge— themed “Building, Breaking and Believing in Nigeria”—will energise diaspora innovators and promote enterprise development, knowledge exchange and strategic investment.
She noted that the competition, which offers cash prizes of up to ₦1 million, will spotlight outstanding ideas and support high-impact ventures developed by Nigerians abroad.
She added that the move aligns with the Federal Government’s broader commitment to recognising the diaspora community as critical partners in national progress.
NiDCOM also revealed that the Connected Diaspora Flagship Event will take place on December 19, 2025, in Lagos.
The event is expected to attract entrepreneurs, tech leaders, policymakers, investors and development partners for high-level conversations on Nigeria’s economic future.
Dabiri-Erewa disclosed that the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, will serve as Special Guest of Honour, where he will address the significance of government–diaspora collaboration in fast-tracking national development.
A keynote address will be delivered by Mr. Leo Stan Ekeh, Chairman of Zinox Group, renowned for his contributions to digital innovation and entrepreneurship in Africa.
Other notable contributors from the global diaspora network and Nigeria’s business and innovation ecosystem are also expected to enrich the discussions and help shape sustainable pathways for diaspora engagement.
NiDCOM expressed deep appreciation to its partners for their invaluable support, noting that their continued collaboration enhances diaspora potential and contributes to economic growth.
The Commission called on public and private stakeholders to leverage the unique opportunities the initiatives offer for innovation, investment and nation-building.
The Commission further encouraged young Nigerians and diaspora returnees to actively participate in the Start-Up Challenge, reminding applicants that entries close on December 7, 2025.
In addition, the December event will feature a Diaspora Talent Career and Internship Fair, designed to connect diaspora returnees with internship placements offered by DOWA partner organisations—an initiative aimed at strengthening talent exchange and supporting national development.
