GOVERNOR Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Wednesday said his administration decided to redesign the traffic flow chart in the Abule-Egba axis of the state to ensure better connectivity with neighbouring Ogun state.
Ambode made the remark in Lagos during the commissioning of the Abule-Egba flyover named “Jubilee Bridge” to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the state.
The governor described Abule-Egba as a strategic route for commercial and social activities that had always experienced heavy traffic gridlock.
He said that the flyover was important to the area as it will ensure free flow of traffic, stimulate commercial activities and create opportunities for the people.
“It is our belief that this bridge will improve commercial activities and promote inter-state trade,” he said.
The governor assured people of the area that rehabilitation of inner roads affected by the construction of the flyover would start soon.
He promised that his administration would continue to provide and upgrade infrastructure to support socio-economic activities for the empowerment of residents.
“Upon assumption of office, we promised to deliver inclusive governance, engage all segments of the society and ensure that no part of the state is left behind.
“We set out with the goal to make every part of our state economically viable and liveable,” Ambode said.
He said that work was ongoing on the new BRT road network to Oshodi, which was another step of making life more meaningful to the people.
Ambode appealed to commercial transport operators to support government initiatives to ensure free flow of traffic by making use of designated bus shelters.
“We shall not tolerate flagrant abuse of traffic regulations by any motorist to the detriment of other road users,” he said.
Earlier, Ambode commissioned the Ajah flyover also named “Jubilee Bridge” saying it was of priority because of its strategic importance to the economic growth of the Lekki Free Trade Zone and the Ibeju-Lekki-Epe axis.
He said that the axis would play a key role in the future prosperity of the state as the home to many multi-billion Naira private investments in the Lekki Free Trade Zone as well as the upcoming seaport and airport.
The governor said that the Ajah axis had been troubled with terrible traffic gridlock all day long, crippling business activities and causing loss of valuable man-hours and revenue.
He said that the Badore jetty would be activated, as reforms had started in the water transportation sector.
Ambode said that a bus route would be created from Badore to Langbasa and Ajah axis while the Badore Road would be rehabilitated and alternative routes created through Oke-Ira to the Epe expressway.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor also commissioned Freedom and Admiralty roads to provide an alternative route to the Lekki/Ikoyi bridge as well as ease traffic at Lekki Phase 1.
