National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)on Wednesday, flagged off the distribution of relief materials to victims of flooding in Akoko North East and North West federal constituency of Ondo.

The relief items included bags of rice, garri, cartons of vegetable oil, seasoning cubes, tomato paste, mats, clothing, toilet soap, detergents, tomato paste, and iodized salt, among other essentials.

Speaking during the distribution the Director General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, commiserated with the affected communities and reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to its mandate of providing timely and effective disaster response.

Umar who was represented by Head of Relief Unit, Mr Ajina Ayodeji, NEMA Ekiti Operations Office, explained that the distribution was part of the ongoing flood intervention efforts to complement the initial support provided to the affected persons by the state government.

“In the wake of climate change on the environment being witnessed globally, there is a need for the Government especially at the grassroots to commit more efforts towards sensitizing and initiate policies to assist communities in combating weather-related disasters.

“These relief materials are not intended to compensate the loss suffered but rather as a demonstration of our shared humanity and commitment to your recovery”

The lawmaker representing the federal constituency, Hon. Ifeoluwa Ehindero (Akoko NE/NW Federal Constituency) commended the Federal Government for its support to the flood-affected persons through NEMA.

Ehindero who was represented by Mr Peter Paul, noted that the relief materials would go a long way to ease the suffering of those affected by the flood.

The lawmaker expressed deep appreciation to the Federal Government for the timely intervention and assured the beneficiaries of transparent distribution of the relief materials.

He said “I wish to reiterate my commitment toward supporting all programmes that will be directed toward alleviating the socio-economic hardship on our people in this area”

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Kayode Oladipupo, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government and the Director General of NEMA for coming to their aid at this challenging period.
