NULGEFOLLOWING the directive issued to all its affiliate unions by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has mandated all the workers in the 774 local governments across the country to embark on a nationwide strike from Thursday morning.

The NLC had directed its affiliate unions to mobilize their members nationwide for a 7-day warning strike over the Federal Government deliberate failure to conclude negotiation for the new minimum wage and come up with a figure as earlier promised Nigerians.

In a circular titled: “Notice of a 7-day warning strike,” sent to all states chairmen and their secretaries, NULGE, directed all its members to fully participate in the strike from midnight on Wednesday.

Signed on behalf of the Acting National General Secretary of NULGE by the Head of Department, Education, Jennifer Besong, the circular directed all the state chapters of the Union to mobilize their members for active participation.

The circular read: “I am directed to write and inform all state chapters that organized Labour met at Lagos on Monday 24 September 2018 and reviewed the struggle for the actualization of a new national minimum wage and the statutory 14 days notice of strike issued to government.

“Organized Labour observed that government had not even acknowledged the 14 days notice of strike and is not making any efforts to meet the demands nor any official correspondence or dialogue.

“Consequent upon the above, organized Labour resolved that a 7-day warning strike shall commence nationwide on the midnight of Wednesday 26 September 2018.

“In the light of the foregoing, the national secretariat has directed that state chapters of our Union should mobilize our members for active participation.”

Meanwhile, in another circular hurriedly dispatched to all industrial unions and all state councils, on Tuesday morning, the NLC said a nationwide warning strike in respect of the non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage, shall commence effective from midnight of Wednesday, 26th September 2018.

Signed by the General Secretary of NLC, Comrade Peter Ozo-Eson, the circular directed all industrial unions and state councils to commence mobilisation immediately for an effective take-off of the strike action.

The two-paragraph circular read: “This is to inform you that the Organised Labour shall commence nation-wide warning strike in respect of the non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage, effective from Midnight of Wednesday, 26th September 2018.

“All Industrial Unions and all State Councils are to commence mobilisation immediately for an effective strike action, nation-wide. A formal notification letter will be sent later in the day.”
