The Oodua People’s Congress (Reformed) has urged security agencies to beef up the security network around the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ahead of inauguration on May 29.
The National President of the reformed group, Dare Adesope, made this call on Friday, in a statement made available in Lagos.
He said beefing up security around Tinubu at this last stage of political transition became necessary due to alleged threats by some politicians who are still opposing his victory and swearing-in as Nigerian President on May 29.
Adesope said the security agencies, particularly the Department of State Services(DSS) and Defence House should be at alert and also caution the aggrieved politicians to mind their utterances and not to further heat up the polity.
He said Nigeria cannot afford to go backward again as the election had come and gone and winners had emerged.
He recalled that many people thought the election would turn out bloody because of the way the politicians heat up the political space at the period but “we thank God that all went well and tension doused.”
He explained that even though the election might not be perfect as there is no perfect system anywhere around the world, that some groups of people could still be inciting the public against the President-elect and his inuaguration even at few days away is surprising.
Adesope said that is why OPC (reformed) would want the security agencies to know that “those threats are too sensitive to be ignored should therefore take proactive step.”
Adesope explained that in as much as there is nothing wrong for any aggrieved political parties or their candidates to contest the results of the election, such contest should be done only within the law of the land which is to approach the judiciary.
“So, since they have filed petitions in court already, they should allow the court to do it work while we all await the outcome rather than for anybody to now be suggesting interim government, which is not only undemocratic but also unknown to Nigeria laws,” Adesope stressed.
