The best graduating cadet at the just concluded 2018 Cadets Passing Out Parade & Graduation Ceremony of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, Nwafor Chikadibia Frederick, has bagged employment offer from Starz Investment Company Limited, a leading indigenous shipping firm, alongside other cash gifts.
Nwafor emerged as the best HND cadet in Nautical Science, thereby winning the Mrs Mfon Ekong Usoro award for best overall cadet, and also scooping the Rector’s all round best cadet award.
Following the presentation of awards to Nwafor Chikadibia Frederick, Chairman of Starz Investment Company Ltd, Engr. Greg Ogbeifun shocked the audience when he offered immediate employment opportunity to the overall best graduating cadet.
The event also witnessed the passing out and graduation of 613 cadets and graduates from the institution’s three schools.

No fewer than 142 students passed out from the School of Nautical Studies, 63 of them with National Diploma (ND) and 79 with Higher National Diploma (HND). Another 325 passed out from the School of Marine Engineering, 112 with ND and another 177 with HND in marine engineering while 36 graduated with ND in electrical/electronic engineering.
Another 146 cadets graduated from the School of Maritime Transport Studies with 59 coming out with ND while 87 passed out with HND.
Altogether 36 cadets graduated with distinctions, 199 came out with Upper Credits, 269 with Lower Credits while 109 graduated with passes.
The event also witnessed the presentation of awards and prizes to 21 cadets who excelled in various disciplines.
Speaking at the occasion, the Rector, Commodore Duja Effedua indicated that the restructuring exercise is ongoing and will continue until desired results are achieved.
Pointing out that MAN, Oron is a specialized training institution and so cannot be open to all comers. The rector also added that the current management is focusing on quality and not quantity of programs, projects and human resources.
For instance, he said the academy under his watch now insists on admitting only the number of cadets it can cater for which, according to IMO standards, stand at a maximum of 30 cadets per class.
