Governor Seyi Makinde has approved the reconstitution of the Oyo State Youth Parliament, paving the way for the inauguration of its 3rd Assembly as part of efforts to deepen youth participation in governance and leadership development across the state.

Following the approval, the Agency unveiled a series of transition activities, including an induction programme for newly selected members, a valedictory session for the outgoing 2nd Assembly, and the formal inauguration of the incoming parliament.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Chairman of the Agency, Adebowale Falana, who noted that the Governor’s approval underscored the administration’s enduring commitment to strengthening youth participation in governance and nurturing leadership development across the state.

According to the statement, the reconstitution of the Oyo State Youth Parliament is a clear demonstration of Governor Makinde’s dedication to youth inclusion and the active engagement of young people in governance and decision-making processes.

“The reconstitution of the Oyo State Youth Parliament further demonstrates Governor Seyi Makinde’s unwavering commitment to youth inclusion, leadership development, and the active involvement of young people in governance and decision-making processes,” the statement read.

The Oyo State Youth Parliament is a non-partisan legislative simulation platform designed to mirror the operations of the Oyo State House of Assembly. Membership is drawn from the state’s 32 constituencies, providing equitable representation for young people across Oyo State.

The Parliament served as a strategic platform for youths aged between 15 and 29 to engage constructively on issues affecting young people and the overall development of the state.

The Agency explained that the initiative is specifically aimed at equipping young people with the leadership skills, civic awareness, and practical understanding of democratic governance required to contribute meaningfully to society and public service.

“Beyond serving as a platform for representation, the Youth Parliament is designed to nurture future leaders, deepen understanding of legislative processes, and encourage responsible citizenship among young people,” the statement added.

As part of the transition process, the Agency disclosed that the 32 newly selected Honourable Members of the 3rd Assembly will participate in a structured induction programme ahead of their formal inauguration.

He said the induction programme is intended to provide members with the foundational knowledge, orientation, and legislative exposure necessary to effectively discharge their responsibilities as youth legislators and representatives of their respective constituencies.

“The induction programme will provide members with the foundational knowledge and orientation necessary to effectively discharge their responsibilities as youth legislators and ambassadors of their respective constituencies,” the statement stated.

The Agency further revealed that a valedictory session would be organised to honour members of the outgoing 2nd Assembly in recognition of their service, commitment, and contributions to youth advocacy and civic engagement during their tenure.

“The valedictory ceremony will provide an opportunity to celebrate the achievements and contributions of members of the 2nd Assembly, whose tenure was marked by advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and legislative simulations aimed at advancing the interests of young people across the state,” the statement noted.

Speaking on the inauguration of the incoming Assembly, the Agency expressed confidence in the capacity of the newly selected members to consolidate on existing achievements while bringing fresh ideas and perspectives to governance and youth development.

“The inauguration of the 3rd Assembly will usher in a new generation of youth leaders who are expected to bring innovative ideas, constructive engagement, and renewed commitment to the advancement of youth-focused policies and the development of Oyo State,” the statement said.

Reaffirming its commitment to youth empowerment and inclusive governance, the Agency emphasised that it would continue to create and strengthen platforms that enable young people to actively participate in governance, policy formulation, leadership development, and sustainable development initiatives.

The Agency also disclosed that stakeholders, government officials, youth leaders, development partners, and members of the public are expected to attend the various ceremonies, as Oyo State marks another significant milestone in promoting youth participation in democratic governance and leadership development.
