Disgusted by litter on medians, roadsides and in streets across Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde, on Monday, declared a state of emergency on solid waste management, adding that a new waste management architecture will be unveiled within the next four weeks.
Describing as sad the fact that the state was living in filth, Makinde said the trend was not only an eyesore but a threat to the healthy living of residents of the state.
Speaking after a meeting with stakeholders in Oyo waste management, held at governor’s office, Ibadan, Makinde said the state government was poised to mobilise all available resources to clean up the environment pending the time that the sustainable waste management model will be brought to the fore.

In exemplifying the need for all and sundry to ensure a clean environment, Makinde, on Monday night, also led other government functionaries on a cleanup exercise across 22 routes in Ibadan, the state capital.
Makinde, however, said he was not unaware of some saboteurs importing waste which is piled up on medians across the state.
Consequently, he instructed security agencies and other relevant agencies to arrest anyone importing waste and deal with them according to the state’s Environment Sanitation and Waste Control Regulations.
He enjoined saboteurs to consider that they put the state at risk of an epidemic by their actions.
