We’re losing through waterways in Africa —Obasanjo

Olusegun Obasanjo

FORMER president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has said African continent is losing about $50 billion through waterways, as a result of smuggling of fish and other water resources.

He said this was responsible for economic loss in the continent and, therefore, called on African leaders to see this as a source of concern.

Obasanjo said this at the first Nigeria Anti-Fraud Conference, organised by the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on  Thursday.

He appealed to all Africans to combat the scourge of corruption said to have been responsible for slow economic growth in the nations.

“$50 billion annually worth of fish and other water resources is illicitly taken away from Africa. This is a major concern for African leaders, past and present.

“We are now trying and putting up efforts to ensure that we prevent it. Organisation like you can also help us and  Africa to fight corruptions and fraud in Nigeria and Africa as a whole,” he said.

President of the association, Godwin Oyedokun, said the association would continue to seek for the, advice and mentorship of the former president in the course of carrying out its duties.
