LG election: Don’t compromise, PDP warns Benue electoral body

Deputy Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party in Benue State, Gabriel Obekpa has warned the State Independent Electoral Commission not to compromise the Saturday local government election in the state.

The PDP chieftain gave the warning at the peace parley meeting conveyed by the Police Commissioner in the state, Hassan Yabanet.

He noted that opposition parties participating in the coming election have deployed so much resources and their efforts should not be frustrated.

Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission, Telumun Tombowua reiterated his commitment to conduct free and fair election, promising a level playing ground for all the parties.

He said that the commission had taken custody of both sensitive and insensitive materials.

He stated that the commission will from Monday dispatch insensitive materials to all 23 local governments while the sensitive materials will be distributed on Friday.

He added that only APC and PDP fielded candidates for all the 276 councillors and 23 chairmanship candidates in the election, while other parties fielded different numbers of candidates.

The CP, Hassan Yabanet who led other heads of security operatives in the state expressed their readiness to provide adequate security before, during and after the Saturday LG election.

He said, “We are all here as heads of security agencies to assure our readiness to provide adequate security for the local government election held on Saturday.

“We have met with the chairman of Benue State Independent Electoral Commission, and we promised to provide adequate security for free and fair election, so, all the sisters’ security operatives are working in unison.”

Meanwhile, three of the five political parties expected to participate in the Saturday, October 5th’s local government election in Benue State on Monday signed the peace accord document.

The political parties are; the All Progressive Congress, Peoples Democratic Party and Labor Party.

Representatives of the Africa Action Congress, All Progressive Grand Alliance, New Nigeria Democratic Party and Zenith Labour Party failed to attend the peace parley.
