A member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon Aina Akinpelu, has decried the deplorable state of the ever-busy Lagos-Abeokuta expressway and appealed to the Federal Government through the Ogun State Government for urgent repairs.
Aina representing Ado-Odo/Ota 1 State Constituency in the Assembly made his position known while fielding questions from newsmen following a House Resolution 138A/2017 wherein the state government was called upon to prevail on the FG on the need to rehabilitate all federal highways in all the senatorial districts in the state.
The lawmaker noted that quite a lot of man-hours and economic activities were being wasted on the highway by motorists as a result of bad portions on the expressway.
He commended the state government under the leadership of Senator Ibikunle Amosun for various palliative measures carried out on the highway, but, however, said such palliative measures could no longer sustain it.
“Various palliative measures could not sustain the real problems facing that particular road and that’s why we have to call on the Federal Government, through the state government, to partner with them so that we can put a final stop to that road menace that is being faced by our people over there. So, I believed a thorough rehabilitation of that road by the Federal Government which has the financial resources or muscle to do that will alleviate the problems of our people over there.
“You see people getting stuck on that road for hours; something that could have just taken you two, three minutes to pass through, you continue spending three, four hours. Vehicles getting involved in an accident while trying to maneuver their way around potholes. Even some vehicles will develop mechanical fault such as overheating and that will even cause a lot of problem on that road. I’m not an engineer but I know we have a lot of opportunities to correct the problem being faced.
“What is really disturbing that road is the channeling of water away from the main road into the canals or rivers that are very close to that area. If they are able to give us enough drainages just like the state government is constructing drainages before doing any road, I think if their drainages are well channeled into the river, then the issue of water spilling over to the main road would not occur. I believe we have expert engineers in the ministry of works both in the state and federal government who can put their heads together and help us to solve these problems,” he added.
