As part of efforts to further improve the performance, governance and administration in the Lagos public schools, the state government has introduced a Volunteer Mentorship Programme for teachers and school administrators.

By this initiative, the retired and experienced school principals, teachers and administrators would be engaged to serve as mentors, using their wealth of experiences to coach the school teachers and the school administrators across the state-owned primary and secondary schools.

The state Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, disclosed this in a statement made available to newsmen by the Assistant Director of Public Affairs Unit of the ministry, Mr Ganiu Lawal, on Tuesday evening.

The commissioner said the initiative, which is in form of stakeholders support to the government was in line with the transformation agenda of the current administration of the state on education.

She emphasised that the mentorship programme would certainly improve the capacity of academic staff and that of the administrators as well as the performance of students of public schools in the state.

She said while both the new and old teachers and those to join the service later would be mentored under the scheme, the programme is open to retired permanent secretaries, directors, principals and teachers from both the public and private schools to serve as mentors.

She explained that the mentors would engage their mentees on contemporary teaching methods, among others and also work with the principals or headteachers on effective school management.

She noted that the interested volunteers would have to apply electronically via a dedicated website or the state government’s portal or via any of the social media handles of the state’s ministry of education.

She explained that only the shortlisted ones among them would be contacted for briefing and collection of handbooks for the assignment while the programme is billed to commence next month.

Adefisayo, however, urged the experienced retired school workers and administrators to see the programme as an avenue to further contribute to the development of education and humanity in the state.

She did not mention if the monetary gains are attached or not for the mentors.
