Kwara State’s ongoing urban renewal efforts in Ilorin, led by Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, have garnered mixed reactions.
As the city gradually transforms into a modern metropolitan hub, some citizens express admiration for the infrastructure development, while others voice concerns about the displacement of small businesses.
Several roads in Ilorin have been upgraded, and major economic projects are underway to boost prosperity. Areas like Sulu-Gambari, Oja Oba, and Ibrahim Taiwo Road are among the many locations undergoing significant improvements. The city now boasts modern infrastructure, positioning it alongside leading capital cities in Nigeria.
Visitors like Faith Awofadeju, from Kano, were impressed by the improved road networks and cleanliness, although she suggested extending the upgrades to other parts of the city. Abiodun Babatunde, from Ibadan, praised the ongoing work, especially in the popular Post Office area, noting that it now looks very different. However, he stressed the importance of adhering to new rules like no-parking zones.
Engineer Onoja Olushola acknowledged the progress but emphasized the need for completion of ongoing projects, calling for further effort from the government. Femi Raphael, visiting from Abuja, highlighted the positive economic impact of the infrastructure, while Oyinloye Alex from Port Harcourt commended the new roads and flyover, emphasizing the importance of maintaining and sustaining these improvements.

The Kwara State Commissioner for Works and Transport, Engineer Abdulquawiy Olododo, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to inclusive development, with ongoing projects such as 221.87 kilometers of rural roads and additional road works in collaboration with the federal government. He noted that while not all roads could be fixed at once, steady progress would be made in every community.
Governor Abdulrazaq, during the 59th National Conference of the Ilorin Emirate Descendants’ Progressive Union (IEDPU), reiterated his administration’s commitment to transforming the state. He highlighted key projects, including the Ilorin Smart City initiative and plans for Kwara State University of Education, noting that these developments not only enhance infrastructure but also stimulate economic growth.
While many residents and visitors celebrate the visible progress, there are calls for further expansion and proper maintenance of the infrastructure to ensure sustained development across the state. The President of the IEDPU commended the efforts but urged further development to transform not only Ilorin but the entire state.
