Kogi assembly wades into govt/workers feud

THE Kogi state house of assembly has waded into the crisis between the organised labour and the state government with a view to ending the strike action by workers.

The speaker of the assembly, Matthew Kolawole, told newsmen in Lokoja, the state capital that series of the meeting have been held to resolve the issues that led to the strike.

Apart from this, the speaker also said efforts had reached advanced stage to achieve total reconciliation among the leaders and members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Kolawole, who expressed concerns over the prolonged strike by the workers, said as responsible representatives of the people, they should be concerned about issues that are affecting them.

According to him, talks had reached advanced stage with the workers, who had also presented their sides with the lawmakers trying to get them back to work.

He said, “We were able to meet the labour leaders last week, the deputy governor invited myself and some other lawmakers to a meeting with labour which also had religious leaders in attendance, we have rescheduled the meeting and we expect that before the end of the week everything will be resolved and the workers will go back to work”.

On the needed reconciliation among APC leaders in the state, the speaker said the assembly was last week invited by the reconciliation committee, following which the members presented their cases.

Kolawole admitted that it was necessary for the leaders to close ranks and work for the development of the state.

He however said the stakeholders were moving forward and on the verge of achieving total reconciliation among members.
