Former Kano State Governor and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has commended the judgement of the Court of Appeal, which on Friday in Abuja affirmed his party candidate in the last February governorship election in Kano State.
Nasiru Gawuna was named the winner of the election.
Delivering its judgement, the three-member panel led by Justice M.A. Adumeh declared that Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf was not qualified to contest the election.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, the APC national chairman commended the Court of Appeal for its affirmation of the earlier pronouncement of the Kano State Tribunal led by Justice Oluyemi Osadebay, which had nullified the election of Governor Yusuf.
Ganduje described the Court of Appeal judgement as a victory for the APC and a victory for Kano State.
He said, “We have to thank the judiciary for providing good administration of justice despite all the distractions that took place since the beginning of the case.
“We have to thank the judiciary. There is no doubt that this is a victory for democracy. It is a victory for the APC and a victory for Kano State.
“This is an indication that democracy has come to stay in Nigeria. Democracy, we can say, is mature in Nigeria. We have to thank all those stakeholders, even the political parties and even the NNPP, that took us to the Appeal Court.
“We have to thank them because they are part of the process of democracy. There is no doubt that after the election, you get to litigation. And the end result is always determined by the judiciary.
“For Kano State, this victory is for all of us. We are fully aware; we know what happens during the election.
There were a lot of malpractices, and we took the issue to the tribunal. And by the grace of God, we got a fair judgement in favour of our great party. APC.
“Now, with the government in power, the NNPP decided to go to the Court of Appeal, and this morning, with the powers of God, the Court of Appeal affirmed the judgement of the lower court. And by so doing, our gubernatorial candidate, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, is duly elected governor of Kano State.
“But in all, probably they will go to the Supreme Court, which is part of democracy. There is nothing wrong with them going to the Supreme Court. We, too, are ready to meet them in Supreme Court; we will win in the Supreme Court as well. ”
“But, I want to assure the people of Kano State that the good administration that was provided in my eight years of administration was my deputy, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, and now, the Governor-elect for Kano State will provide a similar, not even similar, I believe he would provide a better administration and that more achievements would be recorded in Kano State. Because that is what we expect. ”
The APC governorship candidate pronounced by both the Tribunal and duly elected, Dr Gawuna, said his administration would not fail the people of the North West state.
