In a move to boost the welfare of teachers in the Kano State Civil Service, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, on Thursday signed an agreement to build 5,000 houses for the teachers.
Represented by his Commissioner for Justice, Mohammed Lawan, Governor Ganduje recalled several initiatives of his administration to boost the morale of teachers in the North West state.
He cited the review of the retirement age from 60 to 65 and the age of service from 35 to 40 years.
To guarantee quality education, the Kano state governor revealed that since 2015, the state has never defaulted in the payment of counterpart funding for the Universal Basic Education (UBEC) while his administration has equally been making available 26% of its annual budget for education.
He further revealed that currently, the British Council is assisting the state to train and retrain the teachers on the new method of teaching to improve the quality of knowledge being imparted to students.
“You know we use to have GRA (Government Reserved Areas) now we now have TRA in Kano, which means Teachers Reserved Areas as part of the effort to restore the dignity of education in the state.”
Former Kano state governor and senator representing Kano central, Ibrahim Shakarau, said the housing project “is so dear to the development of education,” adding that of all the projects so far executed in the state, the welfare of the teachers which include housing project is the best.
He further commended Governor Ganduje for his special interest in the welfare of teachers.
“Having plans for teachers to retire into a decent home is also Godly.
“Only God knows the reward you will get by investing in the lives of teachers. Only a Godly man will invest in education because many of those who invested in education will not leave to see the result.”
In his presentation, the Managing Director of Family Homes, Femi Adewole, assured of his company determination to deliver within the scheduled timeline.
“It is our turn to do our part, I want to assure you that we will do our part and teachers in Kano state will start seeing the completion of those houses this year.”
Speaking earlier, Kano state chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Ahmed Ambali, while appreciating the governor challenged other state governments to emulate Ganduje.
