The People Democratic Party (PDP) 2023 gubernatorial candidate in Jigawa state, Alhaji Mustapha Sule Lamido, has urged the federal government to emulate some developed countries by transporting petrol and other inflammable items by rail to prevent tanker accidents and explosions that have been claiming lives in the country.
Lamido made the call while speaking to the press in Majia village, where he visited the families and relatives of the deceased and victims of the recent tanker explosion.
The incident resulted in the death of 180 people and left over 80 injured.
The PDP governor candidate stated that such accidents, including others that have occurred in different parts of the country, should serve as a lesson for the government to take immediate action and for the general public to know what to do in case of such incidents.
He emphasized the importance of moving far away from the scene and promptly reporting the incident to the police and fire service.
Lamido further highlighted the need for people to avoid approaching the site of such incidents and instead report to the authorities.
Expressing sorrow over the loss of over 170 lives and injuries sustained, Lamido emphasized the need for prayers for the forgiveness of the departed and the quick recovery of the injured.
He described the incident as a distressing event that would be etched in the memories of Jigawa people and Nigerians, calling it the “first and the worst incident” to have affected them.
Reports from the state have indicated that the number of deaths has risen to over 180, marking a 100 percent increase from the initial figure of 90. Additionally, around 50 people have been injured and are currently receiving medical attention in several hospitals in Jigawa, Kano, and Yobe states.
