Transition chairman of Itu Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. Etetim Onuk, at the weekend, rolled out the drums in celebration of the village head of Enen Atai Itam, Professor Efanga James Usua, as he marks his 89th birthday.
The chairman, who led some selected stakeholders and royal fathers from East Itam Northern extraction of Itu Local Government Area, said the celebration was necessary for one of their icons.
“It is not a mean feat to have a father like Professor Usua, who has served the state in many capacities and later came home to serve as a village head. He is an exceptional father who deserves the honour,” the chairman said.
Expressing the need to celebrate the living more than the dead, he thanked God for giving him good life and prayed for more fulfilling years with sound health and strength to lead his people aright.
In his exhortation, Mr James Iniama called for intense prayers for the land of Itu and the leaders, decrying the devastating and desolating tendencies typical of the land which is blessed with fertile land and other natural endowments.
He urged men and women in the council to cry to God for divine intervention.
He pointed out with dismay the fact that there was a huge Federal Government’s presence in the local government area with the establishment of the Nigerian Newsprint Manufacturing Company (NNMC), which had employed many indigenes of Itu and Akwa Ibom State in general but now in regrettable condition.
He expressed disappointment on the fact that NNMC is totally desolated and there is absolutely nothing to show that such an establishment existed in the land of Itu.
In his remarks, Usua expressed appreciation to see the local government officials and stakeholders celebrating him in his lifetime.
The royal father said he will still be alive to witness the day that Itu will become a delight in Akwa Ibom State and called on the youth of the council to take up the challenge of bringing the council area from the state of desolation, where they are, to the limelight.
