Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Strategic Communication, Ms Oge Modie has advocated support for youth in the areas of skills acquisition and education.
Ms Modie, while speaking at a ‘Poverty Alleviation Training to Curb Insecurity in Nigeria’ organised by the Ochima Foundation, charged the youth to take advantage of the training to gain self-employment.
She said both the future and the present belongs to the youth, hence the need to empower them with skills and education becomes necessary.
“I am here to support Sam and the foundation on what I think is very important, my message to the youth is that they are no longer our future, they are actually today and tomorrow, so they should cease every opportunity to learn, to build and win anything they put their hands to do.
“This is a very good opportunity to learn how to engage yourself in self-employment, then you can start employing other people.
“So, this is a huge thing that Barrister Sam Otobeze Foundation is doing to support youth, and also help to alleviate the security challenges that we are currently having as a nation.
“It is very important we support the young people, Nigeria has a bulging youth population, and I think we have to do as much as we can to support them to stand on their feet whether it is through education or skills acquisition”, she noted.
During a chat with journalists, the President of Ochima Foundation, Barrister Sam Otobeze, said the aim of the training is to talk to the youth on alternative ways that self-employment opportunities can be created.
Barrister Otobeze who is also the Founder of Barrister Sam Otobeze Foundation said the training is also to communicate and advance alternative ways of dealing with insecurity in the country through empowering the youth with skills.
“It appears to us that there is overdependence on state actors to handle security issues, but as we can see, on a daily basis, there is the multiplication of various security challenges.
“So, it is right to say that security problems and crimes are increasing astronomically and this is rooted basically on hunger, unemployment, scarce means of sustenance of lives, and in that kind of situation, you can always talk to someone who is not hungry and he listens to you. We are re-orientating the minds of the youth
One of the beneficiaries of the training, Helen Chinecherem said “I have learnt a lot, we were talking about poverty alleviation and insecurity in the country, we have learnt a lot about poverty knowing fully well that when the youth of a nation don’t have things doing, obviously, there is going to be insecurity which is going to affect not just the individual but the world at large.
“I think a lot of us that have participated, we have learnt so much more and we will do so much more not just to help ourselves but the nation at large”.
