The campaign flag of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag bearer in Imo State, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, today recorded a shaky start following the absence of former governors such as Achike Udenwa and Emeka Ihedioha, along with other major influential members of the party.
Also absent at the flag-off campaigns were the PDP Federal House of Representatives members from Imo State, including the Campaign Director General, Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere.
The flag-off marks the official kickoff of their campaign in the state, just a few weeks before the November 11 governorship election in Imo State.
Although the ceremony witnessed a large turnout of party faithful, the absence of notable figures like the former governors and federal representatives raised concerns.
In his pledge to secure Imo State if given the mandate to govern the state, the PDP governorship candidate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, regretted that Imo State, which used to be one of the most peaceful and secure states in Nigeria, has retrogressed into a backward state with 83% youth unemployment, one of the highest rates in Nigeria.
Anyanwu promised that his administration would focus on the primary responsibility of securing people’s property and businesses if he became the Governor of the state.
He emphasised the need to strengthen and reposition law enforcement to be efficiently proactive and effectively reactive.
Civil society organisations will also be encouraged to support the government with their advocacy for peace, justice, and compliance with the rule of law.
He assured support for the entertainment industry by partnering to organise talent shows and establishing the Imo State Film Academy to train aspiring filmmakers and actors.
In his speech, the National Acting Chairman of the PDP, Illiya Adamagum, assured that they would return the state to the PDP. He expressed confidence in the party’s capability to win the state.
He said, “Let me tell you, your votes cannot be seized this time around. We know their business, which is 419, and we will send them out of the state and back to their business where they belong.
Our candidate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, loves this state and has stuck out his neck for you.”
According to him, Anyanwu has sacrificed all he has to come out to get the people out of this man-made wahala of insecurity that has plagued the state.
He urged the people to use their votes wisely and emphasised the importance of this election in determining the destiny of the state.
Meanwhile, the ruling APC held what could be described as a counter-rally against the PDP flag-off campaigns in the state.
The APC supporters were seen moving from one end of the streets in Owerri to another to mock the PDP members who were gathered at Kanu Nwankwo Sports Arena.
