The Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State, Hon. Michael Okunlade, says the court has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish the name of the party’s candidate, Dr. Islamiyat Abdulkadir, as one of the contenders for the Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election scheduled for Saturday.

Okunlade explained that the omission of the party’s candidate from INEC’s list compelled the SDP to seek redress in court.

Disclosing this in a statement, the party chairman said the ruling has put to rest fears that the SDP would not participate in the election.

The statement read:

“I am glad to inform you that the court ruled this morning (Thursday) in favour of our party in a suit we filed against the Independent National Electoral Commission over the non-listing of our candidates across 12 federal constituencies nationwide in the list published by the commission.

Considering the merits of the SDP’s arguments, the court has ordered the electoral commission to accept the party’s candidates for the bye-elections, publish their names, and ensure they appear on all election materials.

Notwithstanding the temporary setback occasioned by INEC’s wrongful action in excluding our candidates, the campaigns of SDP candidates have been in top gear since their emergence in the party primaries. They are set for victory at the polls on Saturday, given their popularity and the massive campaigns already carried out.”

The Nigerian Tribune recalls that the SDP candidate was absent during the signing of the Peace Accord at INEC’s Oyo State office on Wednesday.

The signing ceremony was attended by Femi Akin-Alamu of the African Democratic Congress; Adewale Olatunji of the All Progressives Congress; Olabisi Odususi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance; Fola Oyekunle of the Peoples Democratic Party; and Hammed Badmus of the Zenith Labour Party.
