Sunday Adesugba, a sound recordist who worked on the award-winning 2023 black-and-white fantasy thriller; Mami Wata directed by C.J Obasi, said the co-production involving Nigeria, France and the United Kingdom, was bound to be a success from the start.
In speaking with Sunday Tribune, Adesugba said the success of the film was anticipated because “the storyline is unique and the movie was shot in black and white which is not something so common. Also the producer and director are known in the industry for producing and directing great movies. In addition, looking at the cast and crew involved in the making of the movie, I knew without a doubt the movie was a success before it was shot.”
Speaking about his experience working on the film, Adesugba said: “I’ve been with CJ Obasi for the past 10 years (2014) and working with him has been so awesome. Likewise the crew members, we’ve met on different sets and movie locations and it was easy working together again on Mami Wata.”
He added, “I joined the industry in the year 2006 working with Sola Awoponle as a sound assistant. I also worked with some prolific names like Fatai Izebe and Pius Fatoki, who are professional sound recordists before I landed my first official gig in the year 2008.
“Ever since then, to the glory of God, till date I’ve lost count of how many jobs I’ve done as a sound recordist ranging from commercials, movies, documentary and so on.”
Adesugba, who has worked on several movies like Quams Money, Collision Course, Hotel Majestic, Jemeji, Adam Bol, Strawberry Chinny, Ojuju, to mention a few, said: “I’m working on establishing a sound recordist school for people who are willing so I can help impact more knowledge on how to become a professional sound recordist.”
He added that he also plans to do a short documentary on how to become a sound recordist and the challenges faced on the job as well.
