Genital warts are one of the most common types of sexually transmitted infections (STI). The infection is caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Women are somewhat more likely than men to develop genital warts.

Once a diagnosis has been made, you must see an expert doctor for prompt treatment which may include some tablets and local applications to burn off the warts. As in all cases of STIs, it is equally important for your sexual partner to also be treated.  Using a condom every time you have sex can significantly reduce your risk of contracting genital warts. Although condom use can reduce your risk, it is not 100 per cent effective. You can still get genital warts. In advanced countries, routine HPV vaccination for girls and boys ages eleven and twelve are usually mandatory. These vaccines are most effective if given to children before they become sexually active.
