Human Rights Advancement, Development, and Advocacy Centre (HURIDAC), a West African sub-regional human rights and environmental organization, launched an Election and Youth Engagement (EYE) project app on Thursday in Lagos.
The initiative aims to actively involve youth in the electoral process and governance, encouraging them to act as societal watchdogs.
The event, titled “A One-day Capacity Workshop on Electoral Engagements for Youths in Tertiary Institutions in Lagos State,” was organized by HURIDAC in collaboration with The Nigerian Women Trust Fund and received support from the MacArthur Foundation.
It attracted a significant number of youths from various higher learning institutions in the state, including the University of Lagos, Lagos State University, Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, as well as faith-based youth organizations and the media.
Ms. Mfon Enoidem, the EYE Project Manager, welcomed participants to the one-day training and highlighted the workshop’s purpose—engaging youths in the electoral process and governance by instilling a sense of societal responsibility.
She emphasised the project’s goals, aiming to promote citizens’ participation in politics as active players in the political process rather than merely relying on social media.
The overarching objective is to empower participants to hold political leaders and parties accountable for their promises.
During the presentation, Mr. Jamiu Ogunsola introduced an app designed for participants’ training.
Upon completion of the three-module course, participants would receive e-certificates, enabling them to become trainers for new youth recruits, contributing to meeting the project’s targeted number of engaged youths.
A significant highlight of the workshop was the unveiling of the EYE project app by Mr. Jamiu Ogunsola. The app’s objective is to facilitate the tracking of election promises, monitor the electoral process, and ensure that every vote counts.
The one-day event also included a question-and-answer session covering a wide range of political and election-related issues from the participants.
