Those who have looked forward to the December date for one of the country’s most prestigeous entertainment awards, The Headies Awards, may have to wait till next year as the organisers of the award that was set up to reward Nigerian entertainers in music, have announced a shift in the date.
The news was received by many observers of happenings in the entertainment industry with mixed feelings, as some of them who expressed their disappointment disclosed that it was one decision that did not go down well with them.
R gathered many Nigerian entertainers, especially in the music circle always look forward to the December date of the show but with the new twist to the date, a number of them, who would have loved to attend the event may be engaged with other activities in the beginning of the year.
The annual event which will now hold March next year used to be held in March before it was moved to December some years back.
According to the founder of the award, Ayo Animashaun, the move back to March was to reflect the current realities of Nigerian entertainment and also adequately accommodate more music materials.
He explained that based on schedule of releases and availability of talent, “the committee has decided the best period to host our awards in March.
He said that four new categories had been added to the list. The new categories are Headies Viewer’s Choice, Industry Brand Supporter, Best Performer, and Best Song Writer of the Year.
Animashaun said the Viewer’s Choice prize will give full power to fans through a voting system that let’s them decide absolutely.
The brand supporter will recognise brands that are supporting the industry at a time when opportunities are scarce while Best Song Writer brings to the forefront the talents who compose the lyrics and melodies for the songs we celebrate.
