The president of the Ose Youth Development Forum in Ifon, the headquarters of the Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, Comrade Adekanbi Nelson, has condemned the alleged killing of a young man in police custody at Ifon Division Police Headquarters, calling on the State Commissioner of Police to investigate the matter.
The death of the young man, which occurred due to alleged torture, follows the hospitalisation of his friend, who remains in a coma.
Comrade Nelson Olawole asserted that the killing of innocent youth is a heinous act, unacceptable, and a gross violation of human rights.
He stated, “The killing of these youths is not only a tragedy but also a threat to national security and stability. It erodes trust and confidence in the police force, which is supposed to protect and serve the citizens.
“Individuals were reportedly arrested and tortured; unfortunately, one died while being taken to the Federal Medical Centre Owo, while the other remains in a coma.” Nelson further mentioned that as of Sunday, February 16th, another individual had died, allegedly in the hands of the police.
The Forum President called on the Commissioner of Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of these youths.
In his words, “This is a tragic loss for us, the people of Ifon in Ose Local Government and Ose youth, both at home and in the diaspora. We demand that the Commissioner of Police use his office to take immediate action and conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident. We need to understand the circumstances and intricacies surrounding their arrests, including any complaints or statements from the accused persons that led to their deaths in police custody.
“We also call on the Ondo State Government and the National Human Rights Commission to ensure that justice is served. While we totally condemn the burning down of the police station by our aggrieved youths, as such actions will not bring lives back, it is essential to recognize that the people of IIfon in Ose Local Government and indeed all Nigerians deserve to live without fear of extrajudicial killings and police brutality.“
