Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has assured that the state government will continue to collaborate with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) to provide assistance to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state.
The Governor made this commitment during a visit by the Federal Commissioner of the NCFRMI and his entourage to the state.
Governor Bago noted that although the state is agriculturally productive and capable of contributing to the nation’s food supply, it has been unable to realise its full potential due to security concerns and natural disasters. These challenges have resulted in a significant number of IDPs facing humanitarian crises.
“We are supposed to be the ones feeding Nigeria, not relying on others for support. Unfortunately, this is the situation we find ourselves in,” he lamented.
He further assured that his administration would work closely with the Commission to ensure that the needs of the IDPs are well taken care of.
The Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, Tijani Aliyu Ahmed, explained that their visit aimed to distribute relief materials to IDPs in the state.
He mentioned that 700 households from various IDP camps in the state would benefit from the provided items.
The Federal Commissioner also revealed that, according to the Commission’s findings, there are at least 64,000 IDPs residing in various camps throughout the state.
The distributed relief items included 572 bags of rice, 572 cartons of spaghetti, 572 bags of semovita, 144 bags of garri, 96 cartons of vegetable oil, 91 cartons of seasoning, 58 bags of salt, and a solar-powered borehole.
