According to him, been a medical doctor is a moral endeavour and the doctor-patient relationship is central to the delivery of high-quality health care in the diagnosis and treatment of disease, pointing out that patients need not only counseling and treatment but also affection to fully convalesce.
He said government have been receiving information that while some medical personnel are accommodating, receptive and committed to the duty, the act of others leaves much to be desired, warning that doctors must exhibit certain degree of level headedness and sociability in handling patients, especially at this time of economic challenges.
The Governor made the call during the fifty-two Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the International College of Surgeons (ICS) Nigeria National Section, held in Awka, the Anambra State
Capital.
The event with the theme, “The Role of Surgery in Achieving the Development Goals”, attracted Surgeons from around the country.
Governor Obiano represented by the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Joe Akabuike, at the event described health as very important, hence the need to be handled carefully.
The Governor disclosed that as part of efforts to ensuring professionalism amongst doctors, plans have been concluded to introducing residency in all teaching hospitals in the state.
Earlier in an address, the President, International College of Surgeons Nigerian National Section, Professor Alexander Nwofor, said the event is aimed at proffering solutions to the issues of maternal
and childhood mortality in the society.
Professor Nwofor, explained that ICS is a post-fellowship college that supports educational development and humanitarian surgical activities, and strives to bring same to the doorsteps of all irrespective of where they live in the world.
In a keynote address on the theme of the event, the Vice Chancellor of University of Nigeria Nsuka, Professor Benjamin Ozumba, who described Surgeons as one of the most essential group in the society as they are entrusted with the responsibility of critical ailments, enlightened the people on the necessities and requirements of a good surgeon.
In a remark, the Provost Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University College of Medicine, Awka Campus, Professor Walter Nwafia, rated the event high, noting that the association has not organized such an event in the state before now, urging the Surgeons to always work in accordance with the tenets of the profession for positive results.
