The lingering crisis within the lead opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepens on Monday as the Minority Leader, Hon Ndudi Elumelu, disowned himself and other lawmakers from the call for the immediate resignation of the embattled PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, by Hon Kingsley Chinda-led group.
Hon Elumelu’s position was contained in a statement titled: ‘PDP Reps haven’t met over current leadership challenges in the party’ obtained by Tribune Online.
Recall that the PDP Caucus via a communiqué co-signed by its Leader and his Deputy, Hon Kingsley Chinda and Hon Chukwuma Onyema, tasked Prince Secondus to consider making the necessary personal sacrifice worthy of a leader in the party’s current and future interest.
He said: “The attention of the Minority Caucus, particularly members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives, have been drawn to news reports purporting to be the intervention and outcome of an online meeting of the PDP Caucus in the House regarding the current leadership challenge within the party.
“If such a meeting held, it was without the knowledge of the leadership of the Minority Caucus, and therefore in breach of established procedure,” the Delta lawmaker said.
Hon. Elumelu who for the first formally identified himself as the Minority Leader and Leader of PDP in the House of Representatives assured that efforts are ongoing to find lasting solutions to the crisis.
“Meanwhile, we are working in concert with organs of the party to ensure sustainable resolution of the current challenges that will be in the overall interest of the party and Nigerians.
“We appeal to all party faithful, particularly PDP members in the House of Representatives, to exercise caution and patience as the party addresses the present leadership challenges,” Hon Elumelu urged.
Recall that the PDP leadership had in 2019 suspended Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, Minority Leader – (PDP-Delta); Toby Okechukwu, Deputy Minority Leader – (PDP-Enugu); Hon. Gideon Gwani (PDP-Plateau) – Minority Chief Whip and Adesegun Adekoya, Minority Deputy Chief Whip – (PDP -Ogun) as well as Hon. Wole Oke (PDP-Osun); Linda Ikpeazu (PDP-Anambra) for failing to appear before the PDP National Working Committee over the endorsement of members of the Minority Caucus leadership by the Speaker, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila.
