A food consultant, Rachael Ezembekwe, who gave the charge in Lagos on Wednesday, said “the Federal Government, should as a matter of urgency step up it enforcement programme on food satefy in Nigeria.”
This, she said is “to prevent the continued loss of lives on daily basis through food poisoning caused by street food vendors, fast food joints and hotels who lack food satefy culture.”
Ezembekwe, a food consultant with 4 Quaters Consultants, addressing participants at a food Satefy Seminar organised by 4 Quarters Consultant, in Lagos, on Wednesday, said that government needed to seriously enforce the rules concerning food Satefy in Nigeria so that food handlers and food vendors can be properly educated through continued awareness by both the federal and state ministries of health.
“Governments must not wait for massive food poisoning epidemics before they react, but the need to be pro-active by checking on food vendors to know what they are feeding the unsuspecting public with to prevent loss of lives,” Ezembekwe said.
Contributing, the Managing Partner, 4 Quarter Consultants, Mr Samuel Sarah, said that “the Food Safety Seminar is aimed at training hotel staff, caterers and food vendors on food safety management system and hazard analysis are critical parts of ISO 22000 that will help to eradicate food poisoning in Nigeria.
