Veteran Nollywood actor and member of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), Otunba Ayobami Mudashir Olabiyi, popularly known as “Bobo B,” passed away on Tuesday, following a brief illness.
Here are five (5) things to know about the late Veteran Nollywood actor Ayobami Olabiyi.
1. Early Life and Education
Ayobami Olabiyi was born in the city of Ibadan, Oyo State, where he began his education. He attended CAC Primary School in Irifin and later proceeded to Akufo High School for his secondary education. Olabiyi’s academic journey culminated at the University of Ibadan, where he gained further knowledge and skills that would influence his future endeavors.
2. Teaching Career
In 1977, Ayobami Olabiyi began his career as a teacher, dedicating 16 years to shaping young minds. His passion for education was evident in his commitment, but after 16 years of service, he retired from teaching in 1993. Following his retirement, Olabiyi decided to pursue his interest in acting. Although his transition into the entertainment industry came with its challenges, he eventually overcame the initial hurdles and found success.
3. Acting Career
Olabiyi made his film debut with his first movie, Ewolewo, in 1994, which marked the beginning of his journey in the film industry. However, it was in 1996 that he gained widespread recognition with his breakout role in the film Olaniyanu, which propelled him into the limelight. Over the years, Olabiyi became known for his versatility, acting in over 16 films and numerous television productions, solidifying his reputation as a respected figure in Yoruba cinema.
4. Leadership Roles in the Film Industry
In addition to his acting career, Ayobami Olabiyi played a significant role in the leadership and growth of the Nigerian film industry. He served as the National Secretary of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), contributing to the development of the association and the broader film community. From 2010 to 2014, he served as the Oyo State Governor of the Association of Nigerian Theatre Practitioners (ANTP), which later became TAMPAN. His leadership continued to influence the industry until 2020.
5. Honours and Legacy
In recognition of his contributions to education and his impact on his community, Ayobami Olabiyi was honored with the chieftaincy title of Otunba in Iware, Oyo State. His legacy extends beyond his teaching and acting career, as he also mentored upcoming actors in the Yoruba film industry. Sadly, Olabiyi passed away after a period of illness at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan. However, his contributions to education, film, and mentorship ensure that his legacy endures.
