In November 2023, Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, launched the e-CRVS. The civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) system registers all births and deaths, issues birth and death certificates, and compiles and disseminates vital statistics, including cause of death information. It may also record marriages and divorces.
Here are some facts about the CRVS:
1. On November 9th 2023, President Bola Tinubu launched the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System (e-CRVS), alongside the National Geospatial Data Repository and the National Coordination Committee on CRVS.
2. The CRVs is to accelerate the improved civil registration and vital statistics systems in Nigeria over a period of ten years, from 2023 to 2030, in a bid to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
3. The launch is in partnership with the National Population Commission (NPC), United Nations Population Fund (UNICEF), and Barnksforte Technologies Limited.
4. The CRVS would aid data capturing, collation, processing, dissemination, and timely access to vital statistics in the country.
5. This CRVS marks a complete departure from traditional paper-based recording of vital events and information.
